On Thursday, US President Donald Trump declared that he was not planning to deploy more troops to the Middle East. He drew a comparison between Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour and US strikes on Iran during a White House meeting with Sanae Takaichi.

When a reporter asked Trump, he said, "I'm not putting troops anywhere”. The reporter also asked if Trump is planning to send more service members to the area. "If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you. But I'm not putting troops. We will do whatever is necessary to keep the price."

"We wanted a surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbour?" Trump said when a reporter asked why he had not told allies about the plans for the war.

Takaichi's eyes widened, and she shifted in her chair as Trump, seated beside her in the Oval Office, reminded the moment that drew the US into the Second World War.

The President added "You believe in surprise, I think much more so than us".

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt considers it "a date which will live in infamy."

At the White House, Donald Trump hosted Sanae Takaichi, praising Japan for “stepping up” on Iran, however, criticising NATO as less supportive.

Even as he asserted the US “doesn’t need help,” Trump pushed for allied efforts to ensure safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, with Tokyo backing moves to stabilise energy markets. It makes sure for the secure passage, while keeping the diplomatic outreach to Iran in the middle of rising tensions.
